My Publishing Journey or How I Became a Published Author

Since I was 24 years old I began writing the first novel in my Children’s book series called The Brotherhood and the Shield series. I remember I came back from Los Angeles and spent a great deal of time in limbo, not knowing what was to become of my life when I got this belief that I could do exactly what all the famous authors that I read and looked up to did. I could write. And not only could I write, I could use my imagination, which was unrelentingly strong in my mind’s eye. So, I started to write this idea that I had floating around in my mind for the limbo period of my life and once I put pen to paper and text to computer screen, I could not stop. The book and story began to take a life of its own. After several years of writing and finishing the first two novels of the series I decided it was time to pitch it, but I felt very strongly that I needed something to go with my writing. I felt I needed a piece of art or something to represent the vision that I had so I sat out to find myself the most professional artist in at the time that I could find. Upon returning for family visits to Los Angeles I found an artist who worked for Warner Brothers and I admired his work greatly. I had an interview with him and told him my concept. He took a copy of a then unedited manuscript and began to sketch rough ideas for a book cover or a representation of the book somehow. I felt that in this modern day in age that sometimes text isn’t enough to grab the attention of busy literary agencies so I wanted something instantaneous. After two years of collaborating with artist Adam McDaniel, we had three paintings, each representing the three books of the Brotherhood and the Shield series I had completed. Now it was time to pitch. I pitched to thousands of publishers and agents to no effect until a small management firm from Seattle decided to give The Three Thorns a chance and shopped me to Publishing Houses in New York City. Luckily, they didn’t shop me to that many and soon lost interest in the potential my novel series had. After very little push on their part I decided not to renew my contract with them and began to search for another literary agent whilst living in Los Angeles.

Two months and over two thousand rejections later I was left with fourteen very prestigious offers to read my Manuscript but only one got back to me right away with a phone call.

After consideration I decided to go with the agent who I felt believed and loved the novel the most, which was the Liza Royce Agency. And I wish I could take credit for the rest of the journey from there but it was all down to Liza Fleissig and Ginger Harris.

All I can say is that it took book proposals, and the genius editing work of Jennifer Rees (Hunger Games) to have a professional and great YA novel ready to pitch. In the end, The GMMG Group owned by Georgia McBride of Month9Books/Tantrum decided to give The Three Thorns its shot, which brings us up to date and the novel is now set for its official release in the U.S. in a few weeks time, Feb 24th, 2015. The best is yet to come.
