Top Ten List:

Ten Tips For Becoming a Better Writer

1.     Forget the phrase "Write what you know," but don't just write what you think you know. You can learn a lot by increasing your knowledge and then writing.
2.     You only become an expert by reading, research and keeping at it regularly.
3.     Be prepared at ALL times (writing utensils, notepads, phone, voice recorder, etc.). Ideas will come to you at the most inopportune times.
4.     If you do nothing else, it is imperative you have 5 books accessible whenever you sit down to write: Chicago Manual of Style, Dictionary, Thesaurus, The Elements of Style by William Strunk & E.B. White, & On Writing by Stephen King.
5.     Don’t imitate other authors, but let them inspire you. Write until you find your own style and your own voice.
6.     Find someplace quiet, lock yourself inside and write a little every day. This means no phones and no television. Just remember to breathe throughout the project.
7.     Don't be afraid to color outside of the lines. Many authors wrote outside of their comfort levels and they're great because of it.
8.     Join a writer's guild and make use of the critique groups.
9.     Take reading breaks in between projects.
10.  Never skimp on having a MS edited by a professional editor. Even if your mother is an English teacher, she's still your mother and probably bias.
