10 Tips for Becoming a Better Writer

1. Plan your day. Hours in the day NEVER CHANGES. If you only get an hour or ten minutes that’s better than nothing.

2. Research. People ask where do you find this? How do you do that? What’s this? Google is your best friend. Research.

3. Read and study Hooked by Les Edgerton. Want to have some amazing and snag worthy chapters this book is so worth the read.

4. Read and study Scene and Structure by Jack M. Bickman. This will change the way you look at your MS. Your scenes will become sharper and your writing will become better if you apply what you learned from this book.

5. Plot your scenes. I use post-its. I do not OUTLINE the entire story in great detail. That’s too much time wasted when you could just be writing a scene. I do however plot key things I want to happen. And I put how I want it to end. Ex: Girl gets assigned to boy she can not stand. She tries to get out of it but the teacher refuses to change their mind. Girl finds out the boy her friend is crushing on is her brother. Her father apparently had an affair with his mother. School is a nightmare. The town is all talking about the huge drama filled scandal. Relationships torn. Mending. Boy sticks up for girl when his girlfriend says nasty things about his class partner, and her fam. Girl starts to like boy. (See, it’s simple plotting)

6. Study and read books in the genre you are writing. You become a better author by studying how emotions may have come into play with books. How did you feel when this happen to this character?

7. When you are waiting around for edits what to do? Write. Don’t sit around waiting, get other ideas down. Keep writing.

8. How to decide on character names? Baby name books are amazing. Last names: I used my year book you can also use the phone book. I know they still make those crazy things?

9. READ. Go back and read each chapter you finished writing. Why? It will save you time on editing. Also, is the material fresher in your head when you just finished writing it or two maybe three months from now when you finish it?

10. Edit Each Chapter before starting a new one. It saves you TIME, in the end. Plus, when you do this, it’ll make the final edit much more smoother and less stressful. So many times I see my Beta and CP’s pulling their hairs out over revising MS’S or editing. It doesn’t have to be this crazy. Just edit each chapter before starting the next. Then when you finish the whole story and go back and read it, you should have less mistakes to correct. The structure and flow should be there. And instead of taking a whole month off to prepare your MS for Beta readers it should take about a week maybe less depending on how fast you read line for line your work.
